Looking after your wood floors and keeping them clean is not hard. With a little TLC you will have great floors for life!

Caring for your wood floors

Sometimes, we are so busy with work, family and other things that we tend to forget about our floors. It only takes a few minutes a day to maintain your floors. Even the softest of wood floors can maintain their beauty for years if you take some time to clean and maintain them regularly.

Here are a few tips on how to clean solid wood floors the easy way.

Preventative maintenance

Before your wood floors get damaged, prevention is the key! You can use mats in front and beside your doors to control the dirt, grit and sand that can come in on the bottom of your shoes. Even better remove your shoes before entering your home and encourage guests to do the same. In your play areas, make sure to use rugs so your children’s toys will not scratch your floors.

The basic care

Regularly sweep your floor, a quick once over at the end of the day will prevent damage for years to come. This will remove dirt, grit and pet hair that might scratch your floor surface. Do this regularly – every day is possible. For weekly cleaning, vacuuming your floors is best.

Mopping your floor

Can you mop a wood floor?

Yes and it is a great idea to do once a week. Remember, you need to mop your floors not swamp them. Wood can be susceptible to too much water. Make sure your mop is well wrung out and if in doubt dry mop, after to remove all remaining moisture.

Damaged floors

Solid wood floor looks beautiful, but they can be damaged by stains, excess moisture penetration, deep scratches or in proper care because they are a relatively absorbent material. With proper care and maintenance, your floor can last for 20 years or more! The good news is if your floor is made of solid wood it can be resanded and finished again, giving you that good as new look and it will live on for a very long time. Repairs can also be made to your solid wood floor.
