How to treat worn spots on your hardwood floors

Solid Wood Flooring Repair by DIY Parquetry & CorkWhat do you do when your lovely hardwood floor has worn spot? Maybe it’s in a high traffic area or a spot where you have been repeatedly been wheeling office chair and it has rubbed away the shiny finish off your floor.

For worn spot on your hardwood floor, the answer is to fix that area. Replacing an entire floor is not economical and not needed with hardwood flooring. Why would you do that when only a portion of your floor is worn out? Spot treating your floor may seem hard at first but it’s a good alternative to a whole floor refinishing. You’ll realise it’s an easy thing too!

Here’s how to spot treat on your floor:

  • Sand the area. Usea flexible kind of sandpaper. Make sure to sand with the grain and not against it. Sand at least 3cm around the worn out area as well. This will help remove built in dirt in the area.
  • Stain the area. Try out a few stains to get a closer match. It might not be a match but choose a colour that is closest to your floor colour. Apply a 3cm layer of stain in the area and let it dry. Don’t apply too much because you might have to sand it out if it’s too dark.
  • Finish with polyurethane. Once the applied stain is dryyou can apply polyurethane. When applying it be careful. There is no room for mistakes at this stage. Use a foam brush and apply the polyurethane in a thin coat. Let it dry.

Spot treating

Spot treating is a good option, but only if you have one or two worn out areas. The changes in colour are usually not noticeable but if your floor has too many worn areas, spot treating will give your floor a leopard print look. It might be best to consider sanding and re-staining the entire floor or take the plunge and replace it with a new one.

Timber flooring costs

A new flooring project can be a big investment that is why; you want to know how much it cost before making such a big purchase. Ask for a free quote. Make sure your quote includes everything that you will need to pay.

Factors that affect the cost of timber flooring

Timber flooring cost involves two things – installation of the timber flooring and the cost of the flooring material. If you say installed, it means that its price include the fee for both the material and the labour. On the other hand, if it doesn’t say installed, the price is for only material themselves.

Factors that affect the cost

Some of the most common factors that affect the cost of timber flooring installation are:

  • Type of wood used. Do you have a particular type of wood in mind? Locally grown Australian hardwoods are often cheaper and well suited to the Australian conditions.
  • Cost of finishing. Finishing work is required after the wood is installed so make sure that is included in the cost.
  • Labour cost. This may actually depend on the type of work and the area that has to be covered. Want to add some embellishments and designs you require.
  • Preparation costs. The cost of preparing your existing floor to have the wood layed over it. In days gone by wood was a stand alone flooring over joists but today most wood floors are a thinner lay of wood layed over your existing floor for new homes generally concrete.
  • Travel. If you are in a remote, rural or out of the way area you may have to pay travel and or accommodation costs for the floor installers.
  • Quality. Smaller job may incur extra freight or charges if the wood is not already in stock.

3 Expensive Hardwood floors Mistakes you should avoid!

timber floorWood flooring is beautiful. It’s a natural material with some quirks and eccentricities that you have to know first. You should understand how wood flooring works to be able to make sure your flooring will last a life time. Wood flooring can enhance your home and can last for years if you can provide the right environment.

Pre installation

Wood floor is durable but can get damage when exposed with the wrong type of environment. Remember, woods are not indestructible and mostly, they require proper care. Here are common hardwood floor mistake that may cost you a lot of money.

  • Not doing a moisture reading.
  • Incorrect subfloor preparation.
  • Considering the room’s lay out.

Not doing a moisture reading

Wood is a natural material and that makes itsusceptible to any moisture changes in your home. When installing wood flooring you need to take a moisture reading and be aware of humidity levels in your area. Think about the weather conditions and time of year when you plan to install your flooring, wet, hot, cold, dry etc. Speak to your flooring supplier and make sure you are buying a flooring product that is suitable for your conditions to give you long lasting beautiful results in your home.

Incorrect subfloor preparation

As discussed moisture plays a huge roll in whether your wooden floor will last a very long time or not. Some of that moisture can come up through the subfloor especially if your new floor is being laid on concrete. You will need to have a moisture barrier laid between the concrete and your new wooden flooring. When you don’t do this, you could have loose, squeaky or shaky floor boards plus the flooring can be damaged from underneath. Your subfloor needs to be checked properly before hardwood floors are laid. Prepare your subfloor to get even, moistureproof barrier is essential for a great long lasting floor.

You must consider the room’s lay out

The floor installer must know the room’s lay out in order to correctly quote for the materials needed. If you have an unusual shaped room more materials might be needed to get the angles correct. This is the same for elaborate patterns, to get all the piece to fit perfectly you may need extra materials.Your room’s layout and use may determine the choice of flooring and style of floorboards you use. If in doubt speak to your flooring professional before you order your new flooring.D.I.Y Parquetry, Timber & Cork Flooring are flooring professionals who sell and install hardwood flooring and have had years of experience.
