  • Solid Wood
  • Engineered Flooring and
  • Laminate

What type of wood flooring is the best choice?

Let’s look at each type of wood flooring:

Whether you want the real thing in the form of “engineered flooring” or go for laminate flooring, which is quite affordable.

Solid wood flooring at its best

Solid flooring will create a natural and warm ambiance in your home – perfect especially during wintertime. They are also very durable and can last for a really long time. They can be sanded and refinished many times over making them look like new again.  With solid wood flooring, you have many choices of species, types and colours.

Engineered flooring

This type of flooring uses the latest technology in wood flooring. Engineered flooring is a floor board which is made using a layered construction of more than one piece of timber, where a thin layer of hardwood in glued on top of a softwood layered base. This top layer is glued in multiple directions to increase the strength and stability of the layer of solid timber and  is responsible for the reducing the movement of a wood floor.

Engineered wood floors are resistant to moisture and this makes them a durable and strong wood flooring option. Engineered flooring can look like a real solid wood flooring.

The downside of this type of flooring is it can be harder to clean and much harder to repair if damaged.

Laminate flooring

Laminate flooring doesn’t contain any real wood, but imitate the material through a printed pattern set. This type of flooring is easy to install. Laminate flooring is a great option for those on a budget yet looking for a classy and modern alternative to carpets or other flooring option.

Best Flooring Choice | What flooring is best for my home?

hardwood flooringThere are a lot of options to choose from when thinking about flooring for your home.

Where to start can be daunting. Your choices include tiles, carpets, cork, vinyl and woods. Of course in each category there are still more options and variations.

How to choose for the best flooring?

Here are some things to think about

  • Firstly think of the use of the room.
  • Who will use the room
  • What style of home you would like to create.

Choosing for the best flooring will become easier once you know what style you like in the interior design of your house and how and who will use the room. For example you are unlikely to put solid wood flooring or carpet in your bathroom but these options would be perfect for the living room.

What are the types of flooring?

There are many materials your flooring can be made of , a lot of the choice come down to personal option:

  • Tiles
  • Carpets
  • Vinyl
  • Cork
  • Wood – Solid or Laminate
  • Parquetry

Tile floorings are commonly made up of ceramic, stone or glass material that are hard-wearing and are perfect to cover wet area areas like your bathroom, kitchen or even patios.

Carpet on the other hand are popular in bedrooms and are great on cold winter mornings. Different kinds of carpet designs are now available making your home even more unique than ever. Practically speaking, carpets can cost less than hardwood or ceramic tile flooring but will need replacing sooner.

Carpets are not good for allergy suffers and must be vacuumed regularly to prevent a build up on dirt and dust mites.

Vinyl is an all-round good option but will have a shorter life span than many flooring options.

Gorgeous cork floor by DIYCork, is a fabulous option for work areas, children playroom and area that people stand in for long periods of time. Cork is every environmental friendly, forgiving (things will generally bounce when dropped), have great noise properties and perfect for all seasons.

Hardwood or timber flooring the most common type of flooring, they will create a natural look for your home and suits all styles from traditional right through to modern. Wood flooring brings warmth to your home and makes it look elegant and classy. Solid wood is fabulous for modern and minimalist décor and of course the only option is a heritage home. Wood is perfect for allergy suffers and so easy to clean.

Some people thing wood flooring is difficult to look after and has to be treated with kid gloves, no so.

Laminates are also available for the budget conscious or in need or temporary flooring, you can choose an laminated ones looking like a parquetry pattern but not really made up of wood, rather from plastic materials. The cost will be very economical but will not last or stand up to the foot traffic of your home.

Parquetry is the perfect addition to any wood floor, it just steps your home up into that luxury category and you will be pleasantly surprised what this elegant look costs. A parquetry feature can become a work of art in its own right and will surely be a talking point with your guests.

How long does it take to refinish hardwood floors?

hardwood flooringOne of the most common questions asked is “How long does it take to refinish a hardwood floor”? Smart homeowners ask the question, so they know what to expect and can plan ahead. Some homeowners don’t have the initiative to enquire, causing them to postpone the refinishing project.

So, how long will a refinishing project last? A day or 2? Or a week? The answer to this question depends on several factors which include:

  • The type of polyurethane you use
  • The size of your space
  • Weather when applied

The type of polyurethane you use

Marri hardwood flooring

There are 2 types of polyurethane – water based and oil based.

In general, it will take 3 – 5 days for polyurethane to dry.  However, most people prefer the look of oil based and it is inexpensive compared to water based.  The oil based takes a longer time for it to dry. With 3 coats of oil based polyurethane, it can be completed in 3 successive days, leaving each coat to dry for at least 24 hours before applying the next coat. So for an oil based polyurethane, it may take up to 5 days before you can return your furniture again.

The size of your space

The bigger your space, the longer the refinishing task will take. Most flooring contractors can cover up to 300 square metres per day so if you have a 1000 square metres area, add 2 more days for the job to be completed.

Weather

Having your floor recoated in summer will mean that it will dry quicker but remember humidity will also play a part in drying time.

Why are there smears remaining after I mopped my floor?

cleaningMopping your floor is the easiest way to keep it clean. A small amount of hot water and a mop can do wonders for your hardwood floor. Often hot water only will be enough to clean your floor and leave it streak free.

If you are using a cleaner make sure it is a good cleaner and recommended for your floor type. There is a way to stop those annoying streaks and smears that appear after you’ve mopped your floor?

Smears and streaks after mopping

Smears appear on your floor after you mop due to a variety of reasons:

  • Was the dust and dirt removed from your floor
  • Incorrect dosage of floor cleaner
  • You didn’t dry mop after
  • Fabric softener on cleaning clothes

Was the dust and dirt removed from your floor

Before you mop your floor, it is important that you remove all signs of dust and dirt. A simple sweep can do the trick or for a better clean, get your vacuum cleaner out. You definitely need to remove all of the dirt before you start mopping.

cleaning solutionsIncorrect dosage of floor cleaner

This can also cause unsightly smears and streaks on your floor. You should make sure you follow the manufacturer’s recommendations and instructions for the correct dosage to get streak free cleaning results every time.

You didn’t dry mop after

Hot water dries faster and as a result,it could leave smears on your floor. To alleviate this problem simply ensure that the floor is dried properly by dry mopping after you apply the wet mop to remove any excess water.

Never use fabric softener when washing your cleaning clothes

Using fabric softener in conjunction with cleaning agents can lead to unsightly smears. It is recommended that you should avoid using fabric softener when washing your clothes.

What is the best flooring option for heavy foot traffic areas?

hardwoodThinking of having a wood floor for your home? Great!

When selecting the right floor option for your home, most of us tend to focus on the design, colour and the patterns of a wood material. While these things are important, you might be missing an important factor when choosing: the amount and type of traffic.

High footfall areas

Before choosing, think about where you will install your wood flooring. Is it in a high traffic area where high footfall is expected? While wood floorings are durable in general, some of them might not be too resistant to high traffic. Before you know it, your wood flooring already needs some refinishing or worse, replacement. To make sure you get not just the best design and style for your floor but as well as durability, here are some things you should consider:

  • Engineered wood floorings are perfect for areas with high humidity as they are better in handling temperature changes much better.
  • Choose thick boards. Compared to thinner ones, they are much better in withstanding high traffic.
  • Make sure your floor is properly fitted. This can only be done by a professional flooring company, so don’t hesitate.
  • Bamboo is very hardy, long wearing and durable. Although strictly not a wood floor it does have similar properties including the feel as hardwood flooring.
